Brewers hold off Rays 3-2 in World Series Game 1 after replay reversal in the ninth
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night at American Family Field, after a game-ending double play was overturned on review and Trevor Megill then struck out Jonny DeLuca, The Associated Press reported via ESPN. Milwaukee leads the series 1-0.
The ninth inning: With the bases loaded, Liam Hicks grounded into what was first called a game-ending double play, but video review showed Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt’s foot was slightly off the bag, the AP reported. Megill then struck out DeLuca with two runners in scoring position, according to the AP. Tampa Bay went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
How Milwaukee scored: Christian Yelich’s RBI triple in the first inning put the Brewers ahead for good, and they led 2-0 after the first, the AP reported. Jackson Chourio singled home Pratt for an insurance run in the seventh, according to the AP. The final line was 3 runs on 8 hits for Milwaukee and 2 runs on 7 hits for Tampa Bay, Baseball-Reference’s box score shows.
The pitchers: Jacob Misiorowski allowed one run and four hits over five innings for the win, and opened the game with a 103.5 mph fastball, the fastest pitch ever thrown in a World Series, the AP reported. Nick Martinez took the loss and Megill earned the save, according to Baseball-Reference.
Next up: Drew Rasmussen starts for Tampa Bay and Logan Henderson for Milwaukee in Game 2 on Saturday night, the AP reported. Neither team has won a World Series.
