Broncos’ goal-line stand beats the Chiefs 28-24 and takes the AFC West lead

The Denver Broncos came back from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit and stopped Kansas City at the goal line on the final play to win 28-24 on Sunday in Denver, The Denver Gazette and ESPN reported. After Sunday’s games, the Broncos are 6-2 and in first place in the AFC West, and the Chiefs are 5-2.

The comeback: Kansas City led 24-13 after Patrick Mahomes threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Noah Gray late in the third quarter, the Gazette reported. Bo Nix’s fourth-down touchdown pass to Nate Adkins and a two-point pass to Jaylen Waddle cut the lead to 24-21. After Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal, rookie Jonah Coleman caught a 51-yard pass from Nix and then ran 5 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:56 left.

The stand: The Chiefs had first-and-goal at the Denver 4 with 35 seconds left. On fourth down, Mahomes appeared to throw a touchdown pass to Rashee Rice, but the play had been whistled dead for a false start. On the replayed fourth-and-goal from the 6, Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes to end the game, the Gazette reported.

The numbers: Mahomes completed 30 of 41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns, ESPN reported. It was Denver’s 15th straight one-score regular-season win, tying an NFL record set by the Indianapolis Colts in 2008-09, the Gazette reported.
