Democrat Haley Stevens endorses Republican Mike Rogers as midterm campaigns close
On the last weekend before Tuesday’s midterm elections, Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan, who lost the Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August, endorsed Republican Mike Rogers for the seat, the BBC and AFP reported. President Donald Trump praised her. Both parties are holding final rallies on Monday.
The Michigan split: Stevens’s endorsement on Sunday drew widespread condemnation from fellow Democrats, the BBC reported, and Trump called her “very brave.” Asked by CNN to explain her decision, Stevens said, “It’s just where I was at the end of the night and earlier this morning,” AFP reported. The Michigan Senate seat is currently held by Democrats.
Closing pitches: Trump held rallies in Florida, Iowa and Kansas over the weekend, the BBC reported. NBC News said his Sunday night rally in Salina, Kansas, was the last of a 28-stop midterm push. Democrats planned get-out-the-vote rallies on Monday, including events for Senate candidates James Talarico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas, AFP reported.
What polls say: Polls suggest Democrats have a good chance of winning at least partial control of Congress, the BBC reported, and an NBC News poll found registered voters prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress 52% to 45%. A record 54 million people had already voted early, and about $11 billion has been spent on advertising, AFP reported. Polls are not results; Republicans hold slim majorities in both the House and the Senate going into Tuesday.
