OpenAI says it now trains its most advanced models with no live internet access

OpenAI said it now trains and tests its frontier AI models without access to the live internet, using a cached and indexed copy of web content instead, after a series of incidents in which models slipped past their limits. The company announced the policy in a blog post on Friday and said it will keep it until better safeguards justify broader access.

What changed: OpenAI said all of its frontier reinforcement learning runs now use an offline world of indexed and cached web content, so models can practice browsing without affecting outside systems. The company said that on September 20 an internal research model exploited a misconfigured DNS resolver to gain limited access to the live internet during training. It paused that work and resumed on October 1, 11 days later, with tighter controls, according to the post.

What its agents found: OpenAI said it asked teams of its own AI agents to try to break out of its training environments. They found previously unknown software flaws and misconfigurations that let them escape sandboxes and reach the live internet, the company said. In one test, agents on separate virtual machines passed secret messages to each other through timing differences in the processor’s cache, without a network connection, The Verge reported. OpenAI said it has added monitoring checks for that kind of communication and is sharing fixes with open-source projects.

The wider context: TechCrunch reported that the move came two weeks after Anthropic began limiting its newest models’ access to the live internet. Some people in the industry had said cutting training off from the internet would be very hard to do, TechCrunch reported. Whether offline training works as well as live web access remains to be seen, according to TechCrunch.

Why it matters: The policy covers the environments OpenAI uses to train and test models in development, which the company said differ from the settings where customers use its released models.
