Taylor Swift shares eight-minute making-of for ‘Patient Zero’ video

Swift posted an Instagram Stories link to an Apple Music expanded video that walks through directing Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell in the VMA-premiered clip.

What dropped: On Oct. 3, Taylor Swift shared a link via Instagram Stories to “Patient Zero (Expanded Video)” on Apple Music, Billboard reported. The eight-minute clip covers the making of the music video from start to finish, with Swift breaking down her creative process, directing scenes, and funny moments with Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Apple Music’s Patient Zero (Video Bundle) packages the song, the original music video, and the eight-minute behind-the-scenes cut, Billboard and The Brief said.

Swift directed the original “Patient Zero,” which premiered at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27. In the plot, Johnson plays a woman whose health deteriorates while married to Farrell; Swift appears as the ghost of Farrell’s former wife warning Johnson, Billboard reported. “Patient Zero” is one of four new songs on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, alongside “Cleveland!”, “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon.”

Swift on the vision: “I’ve been wanting to make this video my entire life,” Swift said, describing her love of “sleek” films in a “monochromatic” world and calling the piece a “ghost story, meets true crime, meets a lot of the plot lines I’ve seen on Dateline,” Billboard reported. Of cinematographer Emmanuel “El Chivo” Lubezki, she said: “His name is Chivo. They call him that because it means goat, ’cause he’s the f—king goat.”

Cast notes: Dakota Johnson said, “Sometimes when you work with your friends it can really go south… But she and I work really well together,” Billboard reported, pointing to an underwater sequence in matching black swimsuits in an L.A. pool. Colin Farrell called Swift’s creative joy “really quite humbling… very moving,” and described his character as a successful, ambitious “narcissist” and “psychopath,” according to Billboard and The Brief.

What this means: Swift is extending the VMA premiere into a director’s cut for fans — packing the song, the finished video, and an eight-minute process reel into one Apple Music bundle while the Encore cycle is still rolling out.
