‘You Can See Everything’ heads for one of the biggest documentary openings ever as ‘Street Fighter’ leads the box office
A24’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is on track for $12 million to $14 million in its opening weekend from 855 theaters, which Deadline said would be the second-best start ever for a documentary, behind “Fahrenheit 9/11.” Paramount and Legendary’s “Street Fighter” is headed for a No. 1 debut of about $31 million.
The numbers: “Street Fighter” earned $13 million on Friday from 3,575 North American theaters and is pacing for about $31 million by Sunday, Variety reported. “You Can See Everything” took in about $5.5 million on Friday, landing at No. 2. Deadline’s Saturday estimates put it at $12 million to $14 million for the weekend, ahead of the $7.1 million opening of Amazon MGM’s “Melania” and second only to the $23.9 million debut of 2004’s “Fahrenheit 9/11.” All weekend figures are estimates and could change.
About the film: Directed by Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder, the three-hour documentary follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the run-up to her federal prison sentence, Deadline reported; Variety said the pair worked quietly on it for more than three years. Audiences gave it a 91% “definite recommend” score on PostTrak, Deadline said, with 18- to 34-year-olds making up 62% of the audience.
The rest of the chart: “Street Fighter,” directed by Kitao Sakurai and starring Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji, drew a B- CinemaScore, and Deadline said Paramount had hoped for more. 20th Century Studios’ “Whalefall” was headed for about $7.5 million and Focus Features’ “Sense and Sensibility,” starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, for about $6.7 million, Deadline reported.
Why it matters now: “Street Fighter” is the first Legendary title under its new deal with Paramount, Deadline said. The overall weekend was estimated at about $101 million, up 49% from the same weekend a year ago, according to Deadline.
